PRESS RELEASE
Latin American Music celebrated in Berklee’s Viva Latinos! Concert on October 16th at the Berklee Performance Center
Boston, MA, March 15th, 2023 – Viva Latinos!, an annual Berklee College of Music event showcasing Latin American songs arranged and performed by students, will take place at the Berklee Performance Center on Wednesday, March 15th at 8:00 p.m.
Now in its 6th year, Viva Latinos has served as a launching pad for some of the school's biggest performers and arrangers in Latin American Music. Ídolos Latinos is a celebration of the influential Latin American and Spanish musicians that have made an impression on the globe. This show is created by learners of Berklee College of Music, led by bass professor Oscar Stagnaro and in partnership with the Latin Minor Studies program. This performance honors the Latin music genre, showcasing the variety and wealth of the Latin culture.
“The next generation of Latin America artists are meeting each other here at Berklee and forming lifetime relationships,” explains Grammy-nominated bassist Gaby Cotter, Ídolos Latinos singer’s supervisor and faculty, who was a featured soloist in many Ídolos Latinos concerts when she herself was a student. “Musicians, arrangers, conductors, producers, dancers – all these students are collaborating in service of creating the representation of a whole culture with different genres and learning how by doing it.”
From the passionate rhythms of Celia Cruz to the heartfelt lyrics of Djavan, and the soulful melodies of Franco de Vita, each student performer will embody the spirit and essence of at least one Latin American idol, infusing their own unique style and cultural influences into every note they play.
The performance will feature an eclectic mix of Latin American music styles, including salsa, merengue, cumbia, and bolero, showcasing the wide range of rhythms and musical traditions that have defined the Latin American sound.
Songs to be performed include timeless classics such as “Gracias a la Vida,” “Querida,” “Negra Presuntuosa,” “Lo Tengo Todo,” “Naranjo en Flor,” and “Flor de Lis,” among many others, paying tribute to the enduring legacy of Latin American music.
Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door, and on sale now online, at the Berklee Performance Center box office during business hours, or by calling the box office at 617-747-2261.
